The Ujjawala project was first established in 2009 with the mission of rehabilitating victims of abduction. In India, an estimated 30,000 individuals experience trafficking annually. Human trafficking is a terrible crime in which vulnerable people are sold and then used for organ extraction, sexual exploitation, forced labor and other malicious purposes. The Indian government took recognition of this issue and partnered with various NGOs by funding the Ujjawala Rescue cum Rehabilitation Home project to help victims. Welfare Association SRDPS within Vellore district began its collaboration in this scheme during 2009 in order to bring hope to women and children who have been through too much trauma.
